Bahir Dar is beautiful city located in the northern part of Ethiopia, Amhara regional state. The city is believed to be founded by Jesuits in the 17th century. Bahir Dar is one of the leading tourist destinations in Ethiopia, with a variety of attractions in the nearby Lake Tana and Blue Nile River. The city is known for its wide avenues lined with palm trees and a variety of colorful flowers. In 2002 it was awarded the UNESCO Cities for Peace Prize for addressing the challenges of rapid urbanization.
The Blue Nile Falls or Tis Abay is about 35 km from Bahir Dar. The water is a very nice sight, amazingly scenic. You can take a bus to the village of Tis Abay, from which it is a 30-min walk to the falls.
Bahir Dar is situated on the southern shore of Lake Tana. On the islands of the lake there are some of the world's oldest churches and monasteries. There are plenty of boat tours available to the monasteries.
